Joyce Cloakey has found a new home for the popular Saturday market, one that also serves as a fundraiser for the United Church.
Joyce’s Creations, a collection of tasty items including baking and ready-to-serve meals, has been joined by other vendors in the lower level of Chemainus United Church.
“We felt that with the closing of the Chemainus Public Market the community would benefit if the church could offer a minimal solution for the locals to have access to a venue to share their products,” explains Cloakey, whose lineup includes lasagna, chicken pot pies, borsch, cookies, fruit pies cinnamon buns, and more.
The idea of holding a monthly Saturday market began to take shape shortly after the Chemainus Public Market closed on January 31.
“It will provide local artists and entrepreneurs with the opportunity to share their products with all those who live or visit Chemainus,” Cloakey adds.
The United Church has offered the space on the last Saturday of every month throughout the year. The next sale day is Saturday, March 29.
“There are seven new vendors booked for March 29, both artist and entrepreneur,” says Cloakey. “The church will also have a plant sale table, so all you gardeners may want to come out and check what will be there this month.”
Cloakey has been tireless in her efforts to raise money for the United Church in Chemainus, regularly selling her products at the Chemainus Public Market and other locations in town for several years. She’s pleased to see other people jumping on board to provide a great shopping experience in Chemainus. And there’s some good eats to be had as well.
“I have been told by the cook of the luncheon that there will be potato leek soup with an egg salad sandwich. Cost is $12 and this will include coffee or tea.”
The Chemainus Saturday Market on March 29 runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The Chemainus United Church is located at 9814 Willow Street with the basement entrance off Alder Street.
