Perhaps the greatest mystery of Baskerville, playing this month at the Chemainus Theatre, is how five actors can assume the roles of 40 characters. And pull it off successfully.
Opening week audiences are loving the pace and creativity of Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery, a play by Ken Ludwig.
Charlie Gallant, in his first appearance at the Chemainus Theatre, led the hilarity in the role of Charlie Gallant. Alex Gullason, who had a role in Mamma Mia! at the local theatre, played Doctor Watson. Abraham Asto, Jay Clift and Caitlin Driscoll all play several characters.
For a production as complex and fast-paced at Baskerville, the team bringing it to the stage must be first-rate … and it is.
Director Roy Surette carries an impressive resume having served as artistic director for Touchstone Theatre in Vancouver, The Belfry in Victoria, and the Centaur Theatre in Montreal as well as director for many companies across Canada.
He directed a team that includes projection designer Craig Alfredson, Jordan Guetter, stage manager, costume designer Crystal Hanson, Rebekah Johnson, lighting designer, Erin Ormond, dialect coach, Aldana Padron, apprentice stage manager, Chris Ross-Ewart, sound designer, Hans Saefkow, stage manager, and Devon Vecchio, assistant stage manager.
Baskerville: A Sherlock Holmes Mystery runs until June 1.
