Algae Invasion Worries Fuller Lake Residents

Folks living at Fuller Lake are dealing with an annoying invasion of algae that has become unpleasant and unsightly this spring.

Jaclyn Casler, whose family has owned property at the lake for four years, says conditions this year are much worse than normal.

“Apparently there has always been some algae but other owners on the lake say things are getting worse,” Casler says. “The patch is close to the public area. I’ve also noticed some down on the shore of our waterfront.”

Casler says she doubts that there is any collective management strategy for the lake that is fed by underground streams and rain.

Algae is particularly worrisome near the public swimming area.

“Geese in the fall, boats from various lakes, and septic tanks around the lake would cause it,” Casler suggests. “Invasive Lilly pads, lake weed and bull frogs contribute.

“The lake is also stocked with fish so I’m sure that plays a role because there are lots of fishermen on the lake.”

Residents say the water level is lower than usual for this time of year.

“We had a decent amount of rain this winter so the lake should still be high,” says Casler. “It’s currently at August levels.”

Fuller Lake is well-used for recreational purposes with swimming, boating and fishing popular activities on the lake located on the outskirts of Chemainus. The lake is stocked with Cutthroat and Rainbow Trout.

There is a beach, fishing pier, boat ramp, picnic areas, washrooms and a floating swimming pier. Kayaks, canoes and boats with electric motors, are permitted to use the lake.
