Perfect Growing Conditions For This Year’s Corn Crop

Ideal growing conditions have produced an outstanding corn crop this year.

For many folks in Chemainus, watching corn grow is much more exciting than watching paint dry.

Every summer, passersby check out the corn crop on both sides of River Road, near Calvary Baptist Church. The fields are owned by the Plester family, who have operated a dairy for several decades.

“People stop and some take pictures of the corn when it gets high,” says Rob Plester, adding a wedding party used the backdrop for photos one year.

This year something new has been added. A measuring stick has been installed, and it confirms that it has been a great year for the corn. The corn stalks now measure just a kernel over 12 feet and there’s more growth to come.

Plester says conditions have been ideal this year.

“There’s been lots of heat at the right time and even though it was pretty dry early in the year, it has been really good this year.”
