Quite possibly the most popular event of the summer season in Chemainus, the Giant Street Market is happening tomorrow, Saturday, July 5.
With dozens and dozens of vendors every year, the annual street market attracts hundreds of shoppers who descend on Willow Street in downtown Chemainus. The Giant Street Market is organized by the Chemainus + District Chamber of Commerce.
“It’s unlikely that there will be any giants, but there will be an enormous array of other items and attractions,” suggests Chamber director Roy Summerhayes, one of the volunteers for the day-long sale.
“People will be selling everything from baking to books, carvings to coffee and toys to toiletries,” he adds.
The Giant Street Market takes over Willow Street, from Oak to Victoria with vendors lining the street. As well, businesses along the route will have their own displays and their doors will be open for shoppers.
The Market opens at 10 a.m. and runs until 4 p.m. Willow Street will be closed to vehicle traffic and transformed into a pedestrian-only walkway, allowing visitors to stroll freely among the vendor booths and food trucks.
“Local artisans, small businesses, and nonprofit organizations will showcase their goods and services, making this a great opportunity to shop local and connect with the community,” says Melody Smythies, Chamber manager.
“Whether you’re hunting for handmade crafts, unique gifts, vintage finds, or just want to enjoy delicious street food and live music, there’s something for everyone.”
Several community organizations get involved in the Giant Street Market.
Chemainus Legion #191 will be selling hamburgers and hot dogs in front of the Cenotaph. Burgers are only $6 and hot dogs $5. Cash only.
Chemainus Harvest House Society Food Bank will be doing tours of the Food Bank during the Giant Street Market from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They also have some baskets donated by many local businesses and community members that they will be raffling off. Bring your toonies to buy some tickets and support the Chemainus Harvest House.
Folks looking for some excellent, local art can drop by the Secret Garden behind Hansel & Gretel’s candy store and check out Opposites Attract & Friends. This unique shop features a wide variety of handmade items from talented local artists including BB Creations. The address is 9752 F Willow Street.
