It wasn’t The Big One, but it was enough to shake up residents in Chemainus and surrounding area.
The quake that hit at 1:26 p.m. on Friday, February 21, was a magnitude 4.7 jolt that hit a large portion of Western Canada and the American coastal region.
In Chemainus residents reported shaking that was enough to rattle windows and dishes in kitchen cupboards.
Social media lit up moments after the quake. On Facebook Jonalee Gagnon was quick to comment.
“Well, I sure felt that one. I thought someone drove a truck into my house,” Gagnon posted.
In Old Town, Manoharini Devi Dasi said, “My Govindas Thrift & Hippie Emporium just did a shimmy and a shake.”
Terri Hegarty was shaken by the event. “Wow, my house shook, my heart is still pounding.”
Saltair resident Sylvia Holt was still recovering a half hour after the quake.
“The house shook, the windows rattled, the shock went right through me. I’m still shaking,” Holt said.
Chemainus masseuse Jodie Greis saw some humour in the situation. “My client received extra vibrations in her massage session,” smiled Greis, owner of The Winning Touch Massage.

Michael Schenker took a positive view of the Friday afternoon quake that seems to have been widespread, reaching as far east as Saskatchewan.
“Yes, earthquake, but this is a good thing. If we didn’t get these small ones, the pressures on the plates would build up and up to the point of the big one,” Schenker explained. “So I’ll take all these small ones to release pressures.”
